12.10 bug still exists, boots into blank screen. Tried fedora 18 (alpha)

I think i hit the same problem after upgrading a HP laptop with a 8086:0046
graphic card.
Things used to work on 10.04. Now, the system boots on a black screen.
booting with nomodeset=1 as a kernel parameter lets me have a graphic login,
but the resolution is awfull.

g...@lists.freedesktop.org and it seems like this is some thing specific
to ubuntu/fedora like distributions. There is confirmed report of a user
using gentoo successfully on s760 laptops.
