That is an extremely odd collection of symptoms. Can you please retest
with a recent live CD, and run apport-collect 811499.

Malfunction on boot?
Oh, and I also tried disabling sync to vblanc since I saw some reports
online that it had fixed other compiz bugs, but to no avail.
And also, booting to ubuntu classic desktop (no effects) went smoothly,
no issues.
