With the latest updates, LightDM starts with the Driver activated, and
compiz runs as expected. It seems to be working now.

A definite workaround is to use gdm instead of lightdm, I just tested it
and it works, so this is a lightdm problem.

I've tried all nvidia drivers, including direct downloads from the
website. Nothing works. I haven't tried installing gdm and using that
instead, however. May be worth a shot.
Right now I'm using nouveau with experimental 3D support, which works
for basic things, but not for my OpenGL development

Reassigning to X org as this appears to be a driver issue. LightDM
should run a failsafe session on this failure, but this is another bug.
Please attach the xorg.conf that causes the problem and the logs in
/var/log/lightdm.
