I can still reproduce this behavior. Just installed 64bit oneiric in my
new sony vaio yb35 (same as the original user, except a little bit
faster, comes with the AMD e-450 instead of the e-350).
A few minutes after installing, I left the computer installing updates

I still have the same issue with the latest updates in Oneiric. I can
reproduce it although it's not entirely clear cut. If I press suspend,
and wake my computer up within a few minutes, I don't have any
flickering. However if it stays suspended for a longer period of time,
