Did you ever get this working? I am having the same problem. An Acer
Aspire 5750G with both an onboard Intel and an Nvidia GT 540M graphics
card.

The recommended as well as the current proprietary driver provided by
Ubuntu do not work with my graphics card. Even though Jockey says the
driver is active and in use, it actually is not used but some kind of 2D
fallback. NVIDIA settings manager does not recognize my graphics card
and 3D functions
When I remove all proprietary drivers, I can run all of these
applications. So this seems to be a bug with the proprietary drivers
provided for Ubuntu 11.10.
Actually there is a newer driver available from the NVIDIA homepage. I
might try it to see if the problem is fixed there.
