It's a pure Catalyst problem. The FGLRX driver powers the X server, which powers Unity. Unity doesn't have to deal with those internals of the system, it just draws a shell and updates it as needed (i.e. when a new monitor is added or removed), but it doesn't have anything to do with the monitor
