can you use xvfb for that as well? asking because xvfb itself breaks at
least once per release cycle, and this would offer an opportunity to
test what we actually use on the buildds for testing.

A solution to that will be to make xvfb-run actually spawn an Xorg
server with the dummy driver instead of actually using xvfb; that works
on the buildds, and has the advantage of actually using the same server
as we use.
Some things *can't* be tested against xvfb, because the code they're
