package for -intel so that it is listed correctly by synaptic. This

Heh, I would have said the recommendation was to use 12.04 in order to
get the fixes backported. Having said that, it should be as easy as:
$ sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-video-intel
$ git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel
$ cd xf86-video-intel
$ ./autogen.sh

If I've diagnosed this correctly (and there is no guarrantee that the
bug you hit today is still the same one), then an update of xserver-
xorg-video-intel to about 2.19 should fix up the remaining issues. I
highly recommend the packages in raring ;-)
