Public bug reported: Updates to xserver-common and/or xserver-xorg-core currently available in Update Manager result in a failure to boot. The display screen remains completely black and no further action seems possible.
By a process of elimination, all other updates received over the past few days having been installed successfully, the problem has been identified as the two noted files. These are now (25-Mar-12) the sole remaining updates; however, installing them causes the failure to boot condition. The problem is repeatable once a prior disk partition image has been restored.
