I think this happened when I was trying to install the amd graphics drivers, as 
described in:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

(I've been having lots of problems with the AMD graphics drivers in
12.04, before that it was all fine (as long as I installed those
drivers, I had to reinstall them every kernel upgrade, or there would be
problems))
