I had probably the same problem with an ATI 9100 (r200) using xserver-xorg-video-ati/xserver-xorg-video-radeon driver. I noticed that 3d acceleration was working ("glxinfo|grep direct" showed "direct rendering: Yes" and glxgears worked fine), anyway seems like "lightdm" is not able to check it c

After updating the system was loaded into the graphics mode when you select the first item(run in low-graphics mode for just one session), but as I said start GDM, not lightdm. At the same time if I remove the gdm, the system in graphical mode does not start. I also noticed that a sad moment.
