Public bug reported: Hello, I thought this bug would be well known, but it seems not to be.
When I try to boot precise (happens with the installer, too) with my GTX 570, it fails because of nouveau. The Nouveau version shipped with precise seems to be too old to handle the fermi chip correctly and the screen stays black. Booting with the nomodeset parameter fixes the problem and boots in VESA mode (but at least it is usable). Manually updating to the latest upstream kernel from kernel.org fixes the problem (I don't think that xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is really the affected package, but I don't know any better, sorry :/ ) The bug is also described here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43029 and there is also a dmesg from booting with nouveau and a video showing the problem. Possible fixes: 1: Backport whatever made it work in later kernels. 2: Detect fermi (I don't really know if all fermi cards are affected) and use VESA instead of nouveau if fermi is detected. Please tell me if you need more information. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/978816 Title: Booting/Installing with Nouveau on (some?)
