Nvidia has commented:
We've identified two separate issues with 295.40; one affecting
G80-based products and being tied to the security patch. The other
affecting integrated graphics chipsets, which is independent of the
security fix. The next release from the 295 series will address both of
Nvidia's internal Bug is: NVIDIA internal Bug Id 970244 to track this
issue.

Unusual as I have a GTX470 on one machine and GTX260 on another. Both
x64 bit versions of Ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 - both fully updated and using
the new nvidia driver and both work fine.

Updated Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit , Nvidia 9500 (nvidia-current)
Slow perfomance (unusable) on both Unity 3d/2d using an opengl game.
Desktop usage (no in game) is normal or not noticiable slow perfomance, no
crashes.

I tested reverting to 295.20 by installing the binary from Nvidia's
site. Was able to install and performance is good again.
