Assuming that works from the first screen of the installer--what would I
then do next? If it's totally automated and uploads its information to
a server, then I can try it. If it requires any interaction--
particularly with the mouse--then I would be basically stuck.

From what you posted I can't discern what mode ubuntu was trying to run.
Reproduce the issue and then run the command 'apport-collect 983649'
which will attach the necessary data.
