Public bug reported:

I was running 11.10 happily. I upgraded to 12.04 and at reboot, I got
an error box saying that the monitor settings could not be restored.
The keyboard and mouse were dead, and I cannot get past this point. The
so-called upgrade resulted in a totally unusuable system. I have booted
the 11.10 CD-ROM and am running in Try It mode now. All my files are on
hard disk are avaialable mounted as "487 MB file system". What do I
cleanup so I can boot from the hard disk again?
