Looks like I've got a compiz fix for this bug after all. It seems to
eliminate all tearing when playing HD video on sandybridge under
compiz/unity at least. Still testing the fix, but it looks good so far.

If I set up to turn off monitor on idle it dims then turns off. After I move

If so then that would explain the lag in your video. And it should be

OK, the fix is available for testing in ppa:vanvugt/compiz. But I highly
recommend you also use ppa:vanvugt/unity because it contains a critical
related performance fix.
In my testing (with both PPAs) this resolves all tearing in 24-30 FPS
video, and almost all tearing in 60 FPS video. It's

first, it seems to work but it stops working after the first time use.
If I press Ctrl+PgUp key to change the browser tabs on Firefox or Chrome, it
keeps changing tabs even though I released the PgUp key (I actually just hit
use of XKM, which means having the server use xkbcommon (which I'm working on,
more or less) in particular.

Unfortunately we can't fix this for anything that uses XKM, since it
would be a format break to do so. What we _can_ do is to more
aggressively deprecate the use of XKM, which means having the server use
xkbcommon (which I'm working on, more or less) in particular.
