you launch a second audacity without specifying a file, another
assertion is triggered:

I just discovered that using the plugin (Effects-Channel Mixer) will
provide 2 channel output that works with Audacious set to ALSA. It also
doesn't disrupt DTS passthrough for other music, so for now I just left
it ticked and everything is hunky-dory.
