Xenial is on the 2.1.x branch. Upstream maintains stable branches only
for bug fixes. 2.1.5 is a maintenance release and the last version in
the 2.1.x branch.
The same happened for Trusty. It is on the 2.0.x branch, and got updated
to 2.0.8.1, which is the last version in the stable 2.0.x branch.

I know nothing about these classifications. I would choose "won't fix" for this
kind of thing, since it is LyX's (fair) choice to support GUI constructs which
won't compile in LaTeX, rather than an invalid complaint. (Like Churchill's
democracy, LaTeX sucks but it's better than anything else).

\sideset (from amsmath package) is only designed to add sub/supercripts
on both sides of big operators like \sum. The fact that it breaks in
other situations could be see as an amsmath bug. Of course, LyX could
have a UI to avoid that, but it is difficult to imagine which one.

The bug is now fixed in our master branch (it was a tough one to track).
Eventually, it should be backported to upcoming 2.3.0 and 2.2.4
versions.
