I use linux and java since ages now and honestly I prefer to have the jre packaged together with udig. Linux users are no longer geeks and you cannot assume that they understand all the dependencies and stuff. Also recently I made experiences with developers that start with the apt--get java instal

Hi people, I'm new to uDig and am working on a customisation. I've been using release 1.1 but ran into issues with large areal photography jpgs. I decided to give uDig 1.2 a go as I heard it had addressed some potential issues with large image files. The issue I'm having is that my code makes r

I imagaine that have our own JRE will annoy the linux distro's. Unless we have our own version of the jai and imageio packages you can simplly depend on them. Then you use the -classpath and -Djava.libray.path= to define the locations of extenstions you need. While you may still package the JRE wi

This email thread got a bit off topic - with respect to testing uDig 1.2 (so we have an idea what work we want to get done for the code sprint). Jayansh had a go at doing walkthrough 2 yesterday using uDig 1.2 and was kind enough to update the wiki page: - http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/dis

Thinking - the people that work on OSGEO live DVDs (and live virtual images) tend to manage their work with debian packages - since they have been including uDig perhaps they have some experience in this area? We should use the volunteers that are already doing the work. Jody PS. Even if we bundle

There are some scripts that jesse has for building all this stuff from the command line; I recommend you have a look at those since it is nice to have a one button release process. I was simply releasing from eclipse because I was running on windows and have not managed to get his scripts to work h

I am not familiar with how things are done on linux; if you have a better set up instructions I am happy to choose that. Please note that when we are done with uDig 1.2 we are going to be modifying the JRE heaviliy and placing GDAL and ImageIO-EXT code directly into the JRE. So these things are not

Well, I'm probably going to need to build an installer within the next three months for my custom RCP app, and the requirements will be almost identical to installing standard uDIG, so I should try find time to look into this. For ubuntu, unlike gentoo, the packages are binary builds, so are automa

Well I'm actually working on making a gentoo build which is by far the hardest package to make, because instead of downloading and unzipping gentoo want you to download the source code and compile it, in an automated fashion. But when/if I get that working it will probably have lots of side benefi

I second this idea. But there is a catch. At least for Ubuntu, and I suspect for all (most) other linux distributions, the suppliers do not directly support packages that are not commodity (widely used). Less commonly used packages (which uDIG would be), are usually supported by community volunteer
