I have had a lunch today with a family of a wife and 2 daughters, why not the
father? Because he was instructed by Acholi soldiers to carry two looted
mattresses to their detach and he was too weak to do so. They shot him in
Kawempe just before Roko Construction and he died in Mulago hospital. The old
daughter was raped by Acholi on a road block and to today she is still
struggling with mental issues in this province. Eric there are some very sad
stories I have both listened to from this family, but read from their faces.
They abandoned their home and slept in a jungle for months, they ate dinner at
5pm for they feared a tadooba at night, God let no Acholi know we are here,
they drove their Dog to a street and abandoned it for it will bark, Mwami
Kashambuzi the atrocities of Acholi in our country are very painfully deep, and
denying it is not a very wise step forward. And these are the only people I
have been able to talk to, how many are out there that have died in Uganda
under agony? How many girls were raped and have died before being diagnosed
that they have a mental issue? How many widowers did Acholi create in our
district let alone country? How many men committed suicide for Acholi soldiers
have taken their wives and daughters by force? And you want us to simply sweep
all of this under a carpet for talking/raising it will make Peter Simon Okurut
scream how we are bullying our very fragile Acholi?
It is a constitutional responsibility of every Ugandan to make the atrocities
of Acholi in our country public. And listen to this, my plan was to make this
a public discussion so that they also get involved and we see how we can solve
it, they have decided to plead no speak English. To all Northerners in this
very large forum, there was never any one raped by Acholi, we never had
terrorists manning road blocks, we never had properties looted and we never had
a time when to live in Buganda you had to abandon your home and sleep in a
forest. That is a good and smart decision for the only way we can go after it,
is to make the atrocities of Acholi public, that even when our generation gets
dead, our grandchildren from West Nile to Rukungiri to across the Malaba
boarder, make sure that the powers in our country never ever go back to Acholi.
Let us all stand up and make these atrocities public so that they can be quoted
in schools, in Kwabya lumbe, on weddings, on Kuzina balongo, kwalula baana and
in churches.
If we will ever add anything on the Uganda flag let it be “Never ever add an
Acholi with a God damn gun.”

This is a part of report filled by The New York Times of Dec. 8, 1985 under a
heading “Sights and Sounds of war engulf a Uganda torn by internal strife”
written by Edward A. Gargan.
Reports of Atrocities
The war has been dirty. Western diplomats and observers have repeatedly charged
the Government's army, the Uganda National Liberation Army -one of five armies
that are part of the Government's security forces - with widespread atrocities.
There have been many reports of women being raped and villages being completely
looted as Government troops sweep through an area searching for National
Resistance Army soldiers.
Even the Government spokesman, Mr. Lawoko, admitted that ''cases might have
occurred.''
''Most of these points of misbehavior, some of them might be true,'' he said.
But, he added, ''cases of rape have died down'' and the army is under better
control. By contrast, these same observers have remarked on the relative
discipline of Mr. Museveni's forces.
