DDT is a raw deal

After reading the news report that scientists have cleared DDT for use, I would like to join voices with Ugandans and international communities opposed to its use.

If DDT was banned as an environmentally dangerous substance, who is still manufacturing it?
First of all, if the European and US scientists who made known DDT’s environment and health implications, banned its use in their environment, what rationale do those who know so little about DDT have to insist on using it to fight malaria?

We better watch out. Some one is stuck with tonnes of DDT in warehouses in the US or Europe with nowhere to dump it. The only solution is to look around for some greedy, unpatriotic Ugandans as a conduit to dump the stuff here.

I do not trust some of our scientists. They just want petty awards for fighting malaria. Besides, mosquitoes are not the problem per se. They have been part of the environment for thousands of years. Exterminating them will not be the solution; it may environmentally backfire in future.

Since 2000 when my family consistently used mosquito nets (untreated), no one has got malaria. We need not even poison ourselves with insecticide simply to get rid of the buzzing mosquitoes. The solution to malaria is not more chemicals, but the right education.

If it is a known fact that DDT contaminates the environment; can cause liver cancer, infertility and even brain damage, and the EU are likely ban agro imports from Uganda should we begin using it, are we on an environmental and economic suicide trip?
