Gov’t compromised kingdoms--Bunyoro official
By Robert Mwanje
Oct 3, 2004

KAMPALA - Government persuaded three kingdoms to drop federo demands and isolate Buganda as a sole agitator, a minister in Bunyoro kingdom has said.

The minister for culture and clans Christopher Sabiiti said government compromised Bunyoro and two sister kingdoms (not mentioned) to drop federo demands at State House, days after President Yoweri Museveni met the Katikkiro of Buganda Joseph Semwogerere.

Sabiiti revealed this during the launch of a crusade on federalism at Christ the King Conference Center in Kampala on Thursday. He was representing Bunyoro kingdom Prime Minister, Elisa Byenkya.

“She (Mukwaya) took three leaders of our delegations away to some place and compromised them,” Sabiiti said. He also said that one evening in August 2004 a 25-man delegation from the three kingdoms headed for federo talks with the president but Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Janat Mukwaya divided the team, taking some delegates into a closed meeting before meeting the president.

“Later when President Yoweri Museveni opened the meeting…hmm we all wondered. You should have been there to see the shame,” Sabiiti said. “Take this from me because I was there and I wished I had not been born.”

At the height of talks on federalism, between Government and Mengo, three kingdoms including Bunyoro dropped federo demands
