solving some of these, now Perpetual, food shortages.

Ntungamo Prison runs short of food

chairman has said.John Karazarwe said the district had decided to let prisoners 
be hired to work for private developers to raise money for food.Saying the food 
given by the government was not enough, Karazarwe on Saturday said, “We have 
decided to supplement on what we receive from the Government by allowing them 
to do public works that are payable.?He said the district did not have a farm 
where prisoners would have grown their own food like it is with other 
government prisons.Karazarwe defended the decision to hire out the prisoners, 
saying it kept them in good health and helped them to acquire new skills.Ends

Hunger forces 6 schools to close in Karamoja

By Nathan EtenguSix schools in nakapi-ripirit district have closed following a 
decision by World Food programme (WFP) to suspend the distribution of relief 
food.Seven people have also died of hunger-related diseases in the district, 
the Pokot county MP, Micah Lolem, has said.He said the dead included three 
women from Lomeria, Loro sub-county and two others from Ocoricor parish.Lolem 
named the schools as Arengesiep SS in Nabilatuk, Namalu Seed SS, Pokot SS and 
Cheptapoyo Primary School. Others are Alakas boys and Alakas girls primary 
schools.“Some of the church-founded primary schools only retained candidate 
classes while the government-aided schools closed completely,?Lolem said.He 
said the schools, that heavily relied on relief food, closed at the beginning 
of the second term when their stores ran dry.State minister for karamoja 
affairs Peter Lokeris on Saturday said persistent theft of food from WFP stores
