Ugandan reacts to Musevenis speech
By Norman Miwambo in UK
DIPLOMATS, potential investors, journalists, ugandans and British citizens
on Sunday night gathered to listen to President Yoweri Musevenis talk
about his presidency.
However, during his speech, Dr. Rashid Kasaato, a Ugandan living in the
UK, took the floor, denouncing the president as a liar and war
criminal.
Instead of focusing on Musevenis message of economic miracles, the over
700 people at the Royal National Hotel witnessed an extraordinary display
of Kasaato, an ordinary citizen, lecturing Museveni and rejecting the
achievements he had listed.
Museveni travelled from Spain, France, sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and
Norway to Londons Royal National Hotel.
He reviewed how his government had routed black market profiteering from
the Ugandan economy and had linked Entebbe town to Kampala and Mukono.
Museveni praised the Universal Primary education programme, saying the
Uganda Peoples congress failed to implement it yet was in its 1962
manifesto.
As Museveni listed more accomplishments, Kasaato, a member of the Justice
Forum, begged to differ.
Ugandans are sick and tired of your lies, leadership and indeed
dictatorship. You close higher institutions of learning and boast of UPE.
Worldwide, have you ever seen a country employing primary pupils? shouted
Kasaato, the coordinator for Justice Forum UK-Chapter and G6-UK spokesman.
You talk about security, what security? Ugandas borders dont end at
nakasongola, he interrupted.
Musevenis body guards seemed uneasy but the president advised, Muwache
swahill for let him talk.
Before he was whisked away, Museveni (above) said he should be given five
minutes to make his points. If you are a democrat, you talk and I will
respond. This is democracy, said Museveni.
What democracy? Kasaato responded.
Yesterday you stopped a political party from launching just party cards.
Kasaato was referring to Saturdays clash at the Constitution Square
between riot Police and FDC party members.
Museveni defended the closure of Makerere University, saying the government
could not tolerate lecturers who do not appreciate the situation of the
country.
The Movement believes in mass education rather that elite education. You
cannot transform society without primary education because it is the
foundation. But the lecturers want government to spend money on them rather
than on primary education.
Museveni said the problems of Uganda were rooted in not having strong
pillars of state whose establishment he said, the NRM government had
accomplished.
