‘Police pierced nose, burnt friend’
April 14, 2004
KAMPALA – A local businessman, Sunday Sekatte, has accused police of torturing him and burning his colleague’s buttocks with acid. He was appearing before the Uganda Human Rights Tribunal. Mr Sekatte said cops from Kiira Road Police station, travelling atop a pickup, arrested him with two others in Ndeeba, on September 7, 2001 for allegedly killing a policeman. He was yesterday giving evidence before Commissioner Wangadya, in a case which he jointly filed with George Wango and Charles Sebunya against the Attorney General. They are seeking compensation for the alleged torture. He testified that a police officer ordered suspects in the police cell to beat them up again, for about 30 minutes. Sekatte added that the officer who was in charge if investigating their case, one Katabarwa, pierced his nose with a sharp instrument – causing him a painful wound. He told Wangadya that later the policemen found out the people who actually murdered their colleague, hence releasing them on police bond and subsequently setting them free. The other complainant, Mr Wango states that after the police officers searched his residence and found nothing implicating him, they poured acid on his buttocks and genitalia as they drove him back to the police station. Hearing was adjourned till May 24. |
