BUSHENYI – A Monitor driver was roughed up here on Monday on the orders of Mr Lawrence Turyamureeba. Turyamureeba is the district Internal Security Officer. The driver, Mr Bosco Atuhirwe, was arrested on Monday morning at Kyambura on Turyamureeba’s orders. The driver was on his way to deliver papers in Fort Portal. Atuhirwe was later surprisingly charged with assault before a grade III magistrate’s court in Ndekye, Bunyaruguru. Atuhirwe told The Monitor that six men in plainclothes led by Turyamureeba tried to arrest him at Kyambura Bridge, about 30 kms from Bushenyi on the road to Kasese. When he protested, the men hit him several times with gun butts. Atuhirwe said Turyamureeba hit him with a big stick. Mr Yasin Kawuki led the assault on the hapless driver. The other assailants have been identified as Mr Kahima and Mr Bashaija. The policemen at the post refused to arrest him, saying there was no evidence that he (Atuhirwe) had assaulted the complainant, Kawuki. Atuhirwe was later produced before Ndekye Grade III magistrate, Mr Rubamba, who cautioned and released him. Court, however, asked him to pay Shs 100,000 to Kawuki. The acting District Police Commander of Bushenyi, Mr Ivan Nkwasibwe, said Atuhirwe’s case is not recorded anywhere in the police records. Nkwasibwe said Kawuki is a former policeman. He was dismissed from the force for indiscipline. Turyamureeba told The Monitor that he wanted the driver jailed. “I want him to sleep in jail, then he will learn to behave. He provoked me and he survived being killed,” he told this reporter on Monday. The Monitor newspapers meant for Kyenjojo, Bundibugyo, Kabarole, Kasese and Kamwenge districts were never delivered. |
