Students Oppose 3rd Term

SUPRISED: Gareson Opala

By Edris Kisambira
Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) has expressed fear for their future at cabinet’s proposal to scrap the two-term limit for president.

UNSA chairman Gareson Opala, said students find the stand surprising and misleading.
He was addressing a press conference on Monday at UNSA secretariat in Kampala.
Opala said, “The students have been observing national issues like the Kony war and the presidential term limit which affect the lives and future of students of Uganda.”

He said he had consulted with students in 30 districts on the issues and all were aware of the outcome of the Movement’s proposed amendment on the presidential term limit.
“While the CRC's findings have not been presented, the cabinet has already made a stand," Opala said.

He said the students had given their views to the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) and believed it wrong to open up debates on the matter.

He said many s tudents in the north and east have left school due to the war and they want to know the government’s plans for them.

UMSA called on the government to implement the quota system of admissions to universities and other tertiary institutions.

He said students have also called for foreign intervention to stop the Kony war and bring an immediate and sustainable end to the suffering of the students and pupils there.
