US middle east policy irks Muslims

PINNED: Mary Jeffers

By Edris Kisambira

UGANDAN Muslims have expressed concern over the United States policy on the Arab world.

Members said what the US government has failed to realise is that the Israel-Palestine question is the underlying factor in the animosity between the Islamic Arab world and the Christian West.

They were reacting to comments made by Mary Jeffers, the spokesperson of the US embassy in Uganda, on the Iraq crisis during the weekly Ramadhan seminar at Kibuli Muslim Teachers College (KMTU) over the weekend.

Members pinned Jeffers over her government’s policy on the Arab world, saying it was a deliberate effort of the US government to see their Muslim brothers suffer.

Hussein Kyanjo, a Makerere University lecturer, while discussing Jeffer’s presentation said, “statements from America concern us. they leave us in a lot of fear as brothers of the same faith.”

Kyanjo accused the US government of secretly monitoring what goes on in madrasas (Quran schools) in countries across the world where Islam is practiced.

He said, “this is a violation of the rights of Muslims. Why does the US think that someone spends time trying to understand a huge book and then go ahead to use it against others?”
