State house to probe sale of Bonn house

By John Odyek

State House has dispatched a team of investigators to probe the sale of the official residence of Uganda’s ambassador in Bonn, Germany.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by Jack Sabiti (Rukiga), queried the proceeds of the sale, which took place in 2000.
He also wanted to know who authorised it.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday appeared before the committee to explain queries in the auditor general’s report of 2000/2001.

The officials said State House was expected to report on the sale.
The report said the residence was sold for 650,000 deutshmarks but the actual amount attained from the sale could not be ascertained.

The Auditor General, John Muwanga, said although a board of survey was set up for the purpose of the sale, neither a valuation, nor a sale report was availed for audit.

The report said the money from the sale of the residence, DM 373,501.43 wa s illegally sent to buy a chancery in Pretoria, DM 140,191.67 was sent to renovate the Paris mission and the balance of DM136,308 was not accounted for.
