The Society of Genealogists (UK) has the following events scheduled
for October, which I quote from their newsletter.

Occupations

- The Postal Museum and Mail Rail:  A Resource for Family History
Thursday, 7 October – 2pm
Chris Taft, Head of Collections at The Postal Museum, joins us to
introduce the Museum, based in London, and Mail Rail. Mail services in
Britain have been operating since the 1500s, in one form or another,
and Chris includes a brief history to set the scene. Chris also
explains how you can use the records held at The Postal Museum to
research your family history. A one-hour talk cost £10.00 / £6.50 SoG
members

- A Stitch in Time: A social history of Seamstresses, Dressmakers and
Tailors Saturday, 9 October – 10:30
Adele Emm describes the lives and jobs of people who worked in the
clothing trade. Many of us have dressmakers and tailors on our family
trees. Adele explains how remuneration and working conditions were
often appalling. 'Slop shops' or sweat shops were in existence since
at least Samuel Pepys' time. A one-hour talk cost £10.00 /£6.50 SoG
members

Researching your Coal Miner Family in England  To be Recorded
Saturday, 9 October – 2pm
Jill Clapham, Librarian at the National Coal Mining Museum, explains
the different types of jobs the miners held and what that entailed.
She gives us a brief history of coal mining and working conditions,
especially for children. She explains the important 1842 Mines Act
that introduced a minimum age for boys in underground work. cost
£10.00/£6.50 SoG members

Tithe & Enclosure Maps and Records for Genealogists and Local
Historians To be Recorded Saturday, 16 October – 2pm
Gill Blanchard explains who created the records, their historical
context, and the people and types of information that were included.
Gill also shows where to find tithe and enclosure records locally,
nationally and online

Careers in Genealogy: Want to be a Professional? Saturday, 30 October
– 10:30-13:00
In this half-day course, Antony covers:
- Establishing yourself as a business
- Possible qualifications to achieve
- Joining professional bodies and accreditation
- Costs, charges, business plans and numerous other things to consider
-There will be a question and answer session at the end of the course.
A half-day course cost £20.00 /£16.00 SPG members
