I've seen them in 8-bit, 12-bit, 16-bit and 18-bit varieties.
The trouble, though, is that 1 character (in this context)
can be represented by from 16 bits to 6*16 bits.

Apology if this is not related to the list, there are some
companies who offer replication services of PROTECTED
CD'S (not copyable by CD-RW). Is this protection relaible?
