In early January, our local newspaper run an article, titled
(my translation) "Neglected catastrophes" which went along the
following lines (from memory):
   These days, the gutter press has exercised uncommon restrain,
   letting slip a number of opportunities to report about extra-
   ordinary catastrophes.
   During a sylvester party on ..., an island right behind the
   international date line, on January 1st, 0:05 h local time,
   a glass of champaign has been knocked over: this was the
   greatest flooding in this century, so far. In the night of
   Jan. 1st, the thermometer read -1°C, on the Brocken mountain:
   the lowest temperature recorded in Germany in this century,
   so far.
And so forth, almost a whole column. Twas fun to read.
