The 'ruby extensions for HTML' are defined in
http://www.w3.org/TR/ruby/, a W3C recommendation.

As far as I know, IE5 and later support the 'simple ruby markup'
(including parentheses) defined in the Recommendation
(see http://www.w3.org/TR/ruby/#simple-ruby1), but do
not support complex ruby markup.
