Helen Gym, the Philadelphia Inquirer's 2007 Citizen of the Year is the keynote speaker. Gym, a former public school teacher, is a founder of Parents United for Public Education, an independent parent-led group that has worked to bring public financial accountability to the School District of Philadelphia. As a board member of Asian Americans United, Gym has worked on campaigns for affordable housing and immigrant rights. Gym is Powel Elementary School Parent. She was a founder of the Philadelphia Public School Notebook and founding board member of the Folk Arts and Cultural Treasures Charter School. Ms. Gym will be speaking about Parents United for Public Education's advocacy work in Philadelphia and will answer questions from the audience. Meeting will also feature short presentations from new Baltimore Ave. businesses.
