Listed below, and back by popular demand, are Sites, Tips and Resources for the Disposal and Recycling of unwanted items. ***********************************************
Trash and Recycling are now collected on the same day. For UC-Blue it is Wednesday. Trash is collected every week and Recycling every other week (including THIS WEEK) There are strict rules for Disposal, enforced with ticketing and fines. The fines average about $25.00 per offense and can be cumulative totalling $100 or more. The regulations are available at the Streets Department Web-site http://www.phila.gov/streets/ Some are listed below for easy reference. Residential Property owners may put out 12 items of less than 40#s per week. This can be: 12 sealed plastic bags or 6 Trash Cans (Large cans count as 2 bags) or (Appliances, Sofas or Large Items may be substituted for cans but advance arrangements should be made with Bulk Hauling.) Most construction materiels may NOT be put at the curb. Wood or Garden debris (must be in bundles of less than 4' lengths and be of reasonable weight and count as items.) Corrugated boxes may NOT be used as containers. Blue Recycling Boxes may not be used for trash. There is no limit on properly used Recycling cans and boxes. Glass, Cans and Mixed paper should be recycled. Plastic and Corrugated may be delivered to the Firehouse Market sec 50th and Baltimore on 1st and 3rd Saturdays 9 AM to 12:30 PM. Home Owners who place a large appliances (or piece of furniture) at the curb on Trash Day, should call Bulk Hauling the day before pickup, to make arrangements so that the Flat Bed which follows the Dump Trucks can be directed to the property. If the "trash" appliance is a refrigerator, I've been told doors must be removed and put out in a separate time or place. This is to prevent suffocation of kids or pets. To E-mail the streets department with requests for Bulk Hauling send E-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or click upon: http://www.phila.gov/streets/ or call the direct number 215-686-5560. ask for Trash / Bulk Hauling and give your Location as "Address + West Philly + Zip Code. Note you can find "STREETS" (and most City Services) through the City Switchboard 215-Mu6-1776. To jog your memory, "Mu" stands for Municipal and 1776 represents Philadelphia's importance in the creation of the U.S.A. If an appliance still works, there are many organizations both NON and FOR profit that will take it. *********************************************** Recycling info is available at http://www.ucityphila.org/community/recycling.html This also contains information about services performed by the Streets Department, and lists several useful phone numbers. The Recycling Map is available at http://www.phila.gov/streets/recyclingblueweek.html *********************************************** For stains, corrosives, flammables and toxins (like paint thinner, oil-based paint cans, turpentine, fertilizer, wood stripper, pesticides, etc.) that shouldn't go down the drain (into our water ways), the Streets Department runs a program to take care of disposing hazardous household waste in a responsible manner. There are designated sites open on Saturdays throughout the region from 9am-3pm. Upcoming dates and locations are: October 5 - Streets Dept. site at Ridge and Sedgley Ave. October 19 - 3033 S. 63rd Street, northwest of Passyunk Ave. Not too far from us. November 2 - Streets Dept. facility Delaware Ave. and Wheatsheaf Lane. This is off the Allegheny Ave. exit of I-95 in Bridesburg. (Drive south on 49th to the forced right. Make the first left and enter at the "gate house". Follow signs and the instructions of the Civil Servant at the gate.) Passenger vehicles dump for free but are limited to one trip per day. Drivers of Commercial Vehicles, including Panel Vans, pay for the service. *********************************************** Diane-Louise (D-L) Wormley is another wonderful resource. She has always been generous with advice and direction and is networked with folks who can help solve trash and nuisance problems at the neighborhood level. She is the Director of the PRIMER program for the University City District 3940 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19104 215-243-0555, ext 229 215-243-0557 - FAX Her direct E-mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED] The UCD site is http://www.ucityphila.org The Litter Coalition - Educates, Advocates and Practices keeping UC Litter free. http://www.ucityphila.org/community/litterco.html *********************************************** If nothing else works, there are three numbers any resident can call for various trash problems: Area Supervisor: 215-685-2602 Sanitation Police: 215-686-3082 Enforcement: 215-685-5618 *********************************************** Please remember disposal is the last resort. Places like Second Mile Center, Toviah, Uhuru, St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army are grateful for gently used items which can be delivered directly to the needy &/or sold to fund a specific mission. Many repair shops are grateful for the working parts in broken appliances. Several charities offer Tax Deductions in exchange for obsolete automobiles. Garbage makes terrific compost. We've had great success making wonderful top soil in the low-odor container which my husband obtained by attending a Phila Green workshop. Using less and recycling more, saves money and the planet.
