I had been a Metacity stalwart, but decided to try compiz again having
jsut bought a new laptop with Jaunty. I copied all my configuration
files fromt he old laptop and everything worked fine. Now having
changed to compiz I am getting this no window manager on login

I guess we just have to leave the first point then. Sad but seemingly

Thanks for the builds in your PPA. They fix the noise I got with the
normal packages for Jaunty 64 bit. Could you rebuild these without debug
info printed to terminal and get then into jaunty via backports repo?

Sorry for not responding.
Problem was solved by reverting the xorg driver as suggested by Eddie
Padilla above.
The trick to getting around the startx command problems that I had
reported earlier was to use ctrl+alt+F7 instead. For whatever reason,
that worked.
