Dear Felix,
I have more information. It occurred to me that karmic might not be
booting because its partition started beyond 1TB. I deleted the 1TB
partition at the start of sdc and installed karmic on that space and
it would still only boot windows 7 (on sda) and Jaunty (on sdb) using
grub

Good, I have a HP TouchSmart LQ510LA, you install all the Nvidia driver
and xserver-xorg-input-evtouch trying to configure it but I ask that
reported the error attached to this comment. Has anyone made this device
work?
The distribution I'm using is 9.04.

of GRUB 2.xx.

So the real problem appears to be this.
Installing 9.10 to a disc as an overwrite of 9.04 appears to confuse the
Grub installation process.
Neither Grub 1 or Grub 2 install. There is neither a menu.lst or
menu.cfg so the machine bricks.

I can reproduce the problem with darkstat 3.0.712-1 on Jaunty. The
problem is (piping darkstat --verbose --no-daemon through
/usr/bin/logger at boot time):
error: pcap_open_live(): eth0: That device is not up
Changing the boot order via update-rc.d doesn't fix this problem for me.

I will try to reproduce. I've been working from a local ppa snapshot of
couchdb in karmic, preparing a new version to be uploaded, so I hadn't
seen these until just today. I've also subscribed to bugs on this
package, so we should be able to get things cleaned up for couchdb very
soon.
