I have the same problem with tvtime at Karmic 9.10 on Intel 852GM and
AVerMedia Cardbus TV/Radio E501R. Although, the command

works (for me). At least, I've got a playback screen.

Okay, I think I did it. I install these packages:
sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-core-dbg
sudo aptitude install libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg
sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg
sudo aptitude install libdrm-intel1-dbg
Then I ran gdb as described, caused the session to crash by
Confirmed it's working ok with my testcase on Karmic.

A workaround is to reorder the entries in resolv.conf so that the
vpnc generated nameserver is first. It is tedious to do this by hand every
time
one connects via VPN.
Why not just do this?
solution is probably to make resolvconf a suggest for vpnc
why go though all that work when you can
