It seems to be a kernel bus in 2.6.32. I updated my VirtualBox to
version 3.1.4 (sic !) which includes a workaround for a bug in the
2.6.32 kernel, virtualization part. See bug 6100 of virtualbox.
Not alpha2 of lucid boots, well at least I see other problems.

Perhaps this isn't worthy of a bug report, but this is a suggestion that
the default icon for VLC should be larger than 48x48 px. Occasionally I
see this icon blown up and it looks rather pixelated. This should be a
quick fix.

I had the same issue, my lock file was not in /var/lock/apt-mirror, the
apt-mirror was missing from /var/lock all together.
I found my lock file in /var/spool/apt-mirror/var/apt-mirror.lock. Once I
removed the lock file apt-mirror was able to start once again.

I can confirm, looking at the code and testing mplayer that this bug is
fixed in Lucid. It probably has been from earlier times, but it is
fixed in karmic. A relatively new release of mplayer is now in place.
