So which of these fixes works properly? I like the idea of changing the
name of the theme to ubuntulooks, it makes sense and avoids the problem
of not being able to install the new version next to the old.

I think that this is a problem with the detection/setting of the font
size. On my 1920x1280 monitor everything is clearly readable.
