For some reason, sound works now. I did not change anything in Tuxguitar. We
can probably close this bug now.

I installed Timidity through synaptic but it didn't change anything for
me.

Yes, I get sound from vlc, totem and other applications. I assume therefore
that it is a tuxguitar issue.
