Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gcc-avr gcc-avr in Ubuntu 8.10 is version 4.3.0, which has some serious bugs which have been fixed by version 4.3.2 which is available in Jaunty's repos. So I tried installing Jaunty's version on 8.10, but synaptic complains : gcc-avr:

I just tested it on Feisty. Yes, it still crashes/quits as soon as I click on Edit-Preferences, or Edit-Channels I started from the command line, and when the crash occurs, it prints a critical Warning, hope that helps: (zapping:7305): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_sensitive: assertion
