To use the install USB, I modified the "cdrom" line in /etc/apt/sources.list to 
be:
deb file:/media/xxxxxx/ karmic main restricted
where xxxxxx is the name of your usb mount location.

Then update and install bcmwl-kernel-source as described above.
Wireless now works for me.
