Any idea what you did? I'm experiencing this on my desktop machine (but
not on my laptop... both are 32-bit karmic). X crashes as soon as I run
any X app (xclock, urxvt, xterm...)

before trying to configure/compile.

I can't compile rxvt-unicode in Karmic on my laptop (32-bit) or media
box (64-bit).
The steps I'm following are
apt-get source rxvt-unicode
cd rxvt-unicode-9.06
./autogen.sh #doesn't mattter if I run this one or not
./configure
make

Like you, I found this problem unbearable -- I don't feel comfortable
unless the letters are exactly 1 unit wide, 2 units high.
I can't remember exactly where I got this from but if you Googled the
fella's name and some of the patch content I imagine you'd find it.

The git version now runs fine for me, but that's 0.15~git, whereas the
Ubuntu one is still 0.14. Anyway, both run now.

recent release of version 0.14. having had a quick look through the
source code, it appears to be lar
in my case (Logitech Internet Navigator, plugged in with PS2 -- not all
the buttons used to work when it was plugged in with USB), the buttons
are doing the wrong things. in particular:
media does what back should do
mute does what messenger should do
