I guess you're not backporting this fix to Intrepid? (I'm still using
Intrepid since Jaunty doesn't seem to work on my system.) The bug is
still present in intrepid.

I had exactly the same problem, and when I installed libsnack2, transcriber
started to work. So thanks for the advice.

I had exactly the same problem on intrepid amd64 and installing
libsnack2 worked for me also. The dapper, feisty, gutsy and hardy
packages of transcriber all have a dependency on libsnack2. See
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/sound/transcriber,
Yes, libsnack2 package must be a dependence of transcriber package.
Also this information is in description of the transcriber debian package
already.
