As mentioned by the previous comment, does the problem exist with vlc
1.0? You can test this in Ubuntu Karmic, or Ubuntu Jaunty with the MOTU
Media PPA at https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive/ppa . Thanks in

This should be fixed in the upcoming VLC 1.0. In the mean time, you can
save the aspect ratio permanently from the Preferences dialog or reset
it every time.
