Ah ok.
Unfortunately I can't really confirm any more as I ended up fixing it
somehow (I think by excessive use of dpkg --force-all combined with
dist-upgrade from memory). By the time that confirm request was made, my
system had been working for a while, so I couldn't really check and

Sorry,
What "missing information" exactly is wanted? (There's quite a few
"previous comments" from different people!)
Sources.list is attached.
apt-cache policy gives:

but then, that's almost certainly a different version than what I had

_I_ think the issues is actually caused by kubuntu-members-kde4, which
includes amarok 2 as well as KDE 4.2, so amarok probably pulls in KDE.
Now, if amarok is installed and an upgrade doesn't get issued with apt-get

OK, I think I've got it fixed. apt-get is at least downloading and
apparently reinstalling kubuntu-desktop anyway! In summary the two
packages I needed from backports to fix this were:
kdebase-workspace-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu7~intrepid1_all.deb
kdelibs5-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid2_all.deb

Aha. I tried installing the kde-window-manager explicitly, which then
reported a similar 'Depends:...' error, and the same for that dependency
until discovering the apparent bottom line:
libplasma3: Depends: kdelibs5-data (= 4:4.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid2) but
4:4.2.2-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 is to be ins
So what do you get in the terminal if you do say just
apt-get install kde-window-manager
or
apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin ?
