It turns out I just need to reinstall the base package and emerald due
to a conflict in versions from installing via source code :)

are you using kubuntu or ubuntu ?
no output on the terminal means =
1) you type emerald --replace and the terminal go to a new line and say
nothing ?
2) the process is stuck, you need to make ctrl+c ?
3) you got a completed but you have no emerald running ?
