Latest trunk includes my fix plus part of Felix', I believe this problem
is fixed with those two changes.
If you want to cherry-pick, that's revisions 1870, 1874 and 1875.

I am having the same problem on ICH9 (Intel 82801 RAID Controller).
During alternate Installation, grub fails to install and the
Installation falls back to the Menu. Screenshot of the VTerminal 4
(debug) is attached. I´ll provide any further information. At the moment
