Ok so I stumbled onto a workaround while jamming out to some music with
the Rhythmbox 0.12.0 music player.
What I found is that if I bring up the Rhythmbox and play some music,
then open the video in Movie player (or gxine or VLC), the video then
works! So then to play a movie, open Rhythmbox 0.12
Okay, I think what's going on is you're seeing an unrelated bug - on 945
extended resolutions summing to over 2048 wide or high could cause
crashes. That issue is now fixed (the limit is raised to 4096). In any
case, the original issue with video playback sounds like it's gone, so

I've tried booting to Karmic Alpha and am able to run a .wma video
(after installing ubuntu-restricted-extras of course) but only when my
two displays are set to "mirrored".
So as soon as I try to "extend" my desktop onto the second monitor by
unchecking 'mirror displays' in System>Prefer
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/. If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD
